5 Best Places to buy Plywood in Auckland

Do you have a Plywood project that you want to start, it may be a privacy screen, bookcase, desk, Table and Chairs! You have decided on a design or have some photos or sketch.

I will make it out of Plywood you decide, that’s the easy decision, you may go to a big box store like Bunnings or Mitre 10….not much choice there, a bit of Pine or MDF thats about it.

Back to the drawing board you look online and after 5 minutes have 3000 options, no price indication and totally confused.

Make it out of Pine, Gaboon, Meranti, Birch Plywood you get told, the list goes on

Let me help, you need to decide on a couple of things first,

  1. Design, what thickness do you require?
  2. Cosmetics: do you want to match an existing piece or blend with your colour scheme?
  3. Finish/ Quality do you want a furniture grade Ply or will a little bit less do? Are you going to paint, stain, Varnish, Wax or leave a la natural?
  4. Edge Quality: In my opinion this is the biggest factor now in Choosing a supplier, do you want a beautiful clean and bright end grain if it is seen or are you happy with a little less perfect in laminate thickness and colour. see photos
  5. Certification: do you require certification for structural work ie…. or Save the planet sustainable products etc, do you want to deal with reliable trusted products?
  6. Budget: You may or may not have a budget, but to give some ball Parks in 18mm Plywood you can get sheets for as low as around $60 and upwards of $400, this is usually in either 2440 x 1220 or 2400 x 1200, in regards to the questions above the answers directly relate back to price, ie the better you want, the more you pay, the better you get.

Disclaimer: I have over 25 years of using plywood in Auckland, while I have good relationships with a great deal of Suppliers, none are paying me to promote them, unless you see their ad on this site! I do have negotiated trade discounts but I am not aware that they are better than normal. As I am based in East Auckland my choices are skewed because of location.

1. Plytech international, Highbrook,

Plytech is the place to go for best quality Plywood, they source many from Europe such as their Gaboon and Birch which really is a first class product. Most of their products are certified both structurally and Sustainably.

2. Penrose Panel and Roofing

Friendly service, they carry a great range of imported mostly chinese plywood that are carefully sourced, they stock a large amount of laminates and are great for bamboo. they are well priced, their products are good and Daniel will give you any advice you need.

3. Plywood City

They have a good range of Plywood and signage materials with their “Lining Ply” being the cheapest around, its a poplar core laminates with a hardwood exterior, just note that it is meant for wall lining, so if you cut it into pieces you do so at your own risk, it may delaminate at times,
